Mastitis, engorgement & blocked ducts…

Inflammatory conditions of the lactating breast (ICLB), commonly called 'mastitis' or 'blocked ducts' can be both a painful and distressing experience for a new breastfeeding Mum.

Signs & symptoms of ICLB include:

  • Flu like symptoms such as fever, chills, increased heart rate

  • Breast may appear red or swollen

  • Breast may feel sore or swollen

Possible causes and contributing factors:

  • Change in feeding regime

  • Unwell or run down

  • Ill fitting bra or undergarment

At Flow Pelvic Physio, we are specifically trained in treating mastitis, engorgement and blocked ducts, common inflammatory conditions of the lactating breast.

Physiotherapy treatment at Flow Pelvic Physio can include:

- Therapeutic ultrasound

- Lymphatic drainage (very gentle massage and movement)

- Stretches to relieve neck, chest and shoulder tension

- Positioning and posture advice

- Gentle support garment such as tubi grip

- Ice/cold packs

- Advice around ill fitting clothing

- Advice around rest and recovery

- Reassurance and support

Symptoms, if left untreated, can often progress quite quickly. We therefore recommend contacting the clinic as soon as possible to arrange an appointment.

Other management may include anti-inflammatory medications and probiotics prescribed by your GP or Pharmacist. A Lactation Consultant can be another valuable addition to management.
